Hypocrisy and Society

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

“Hypocrisy: The practice of claiming to have higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case.” Hypocrisy comes from a Greek word that means "jealous," "play-acting,” or "coward." This is the definition, as mentioned in the dictionary. But the point hitting us in the face, in reality, is how double standard we are, even when we claim not to be prejudiced when dealing with the day-to-day happenings.

People these days have no shame and turn on the phoney sanctimony. The media comments, the politicians (most of them), and the authorities are sheer humbug. We are quite a mismatch of a nation and contradict ourselves every day. Three indications readily confirm whether a person is a hypocrite or not. The first one is a lie, the second is unreliability as he fails to keep the trust of others, and the third one is to break the promises.

Even now, talking about the hypocritical world, am I not being deceitful to you and myself by not being an imposter, albeit subconsciously?

In today’s society, you are both Arjuna and Krishna. The Mahabharata is between your original, conscious mindset and your own biassed, subconscious mindset, which over time has been deeply manipulated by societal pressure and its “supposed” customs. It would help if you strived to emancipate your soul from the filth of this society's obsessive, judgmental, and ostentatious norms.

“Alluring as it might seem. Once done, its nothing more than an irrevocable sin…”

Today’s flamboyant lifestyle attracts men and women of all ages to acquire fame and wealth quickly and without dropping even a single sweat. Competitiveness has pitted one individual against the other. This has led to a distortion in people's mindsets.

Ultimately, they fall into the dilemma of choosing between actual and supposed right. In this never-ending race to show off the best, people resort to crimes, do not hesitate to commit wrongs and adopt false means to impress people.

This is what makes them hypocritical. The mentality of the youngsters is slowly and steadily getting corrupt in this materialistic world, and the kind of society they inhabit is enshrouding their thinking process and preventing them from getting a positive and broader perspective on what life is.

"People, especially are affected by those who pretend to be what they wish to but are not."

We are tired of corrupt politicians but resort to bribing police officers to escape punishment after getting caught drunk driving. We debate women's empowerment, but we hamper the growth of our daughters by not giving them the power even to decide the course of their own lives.

We condemn the misogynistic attitude of society on the pretence of fake feminism, and we start criticising a new move without proper thought or self-judgement of the issue. We are all biassed; the moment we read something and find it intriguing, we start to spread it amongst our peers without adequately considering it within ourselves or even, as a matter of fact, analysing it any further.

Aren’t we capable enough of formulating our perceptions? Or are we just being too lazy and ignorant to give an opinion—an original opinion?

Period.
